Tomorrow is International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which was established by the United Nations. This day shines the spotlight on the international goal of creating a world free of drug abuse and trafficking (UNODC). On June 26th, people from all over the world will acknowledge the importance of drug prevention and the initiatives taken in the effort to achieve a drug-free society.

Some Facts about Drugs

  • According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, cannabis is one of the most widely used drugs in Canada, ranking third after tobacco and alcohol. Also, regular users can develop a psychological dependence on cannabis.
  • In the past, only Olympic athletes were known to use steroids. However, this is changing. An increasing number of middle school and high school students (especially boys) are using steroids to get the kind of body they desire (National Institute on Drug Abuse).
  • Depressants vary in strength and availability. Alcohol is one of the best-known and most widely available depressants. Regular use of depressants over time can result in physical and psychological addiction.
