A Job Hunt Strategy
Written by Shawn Ruest on 07/06/11
Most people look forward to the summer because it seems to fit very well with the word vacation. But, I on the other hand, think that summer can be just as stressful as the rest of the year; especially for those of us who are students and may be looking for summer jobs. If that’s the case, come summer season, we have one thing on our mind: job hunting.
National Public Service Week…is there something in it for me?
National Public Service Week (NPSW) falls on the week of June 12 –18th (2011). Why should it be important to you? Well, it’s as good a time as any to learn about how the Public Service can help you out.
For example, the Youth Employment Strategy (YES) was developed to help youth like yourself find a job. You might think you do not have the skills to get a job, but you are wrong! The ‘Skills Link’ is a part of the Youth Employment Strategy; it helps youth who live with unique life situations (such as living in a low income family, a single parent household, or in areas where there is high unemployment rates), acquire and/or improve the necessary skills to find a job.
It’s a Service for Everyone
The National Public Service also operates over 300 Service Canada Centres for Youth (SCCY) nationwide. These centres help you get your job hunt started and give you tips on how to make a good impression on potential employers. They also provide tools you can use at their job centres like computers and fax machines. These centres also provide information about what kinds of jobs are out there, different rates of pay and workplace safety standards. You can also check out our DEAL.org factsheet on job hunting. These great programs are a good enough reason for me to care about National Public Service Week, how bout you?
