Give back to YOUR community:

Another way to give back is by volunteering in your own community. It is never easy to decide who we want to give our time to, so here a few tips that might help you choose:

  • Start by identifying your interests and use this to narrow your search (Parent Further).
  • Look for volunteer centers in your area.
  • If you can’t decide between a few organizations, try volunteering for them all at different points in time (Parent Further). This will get you more experience and will help you learn more about your likes and talents.

Create your own initiative!

If you would be more interested in developing your own project, start small (Parent further). For example, you can cook for a less fortunate neighborhood, visit the elders in your community, create activities for sick children in the hospital, etc. When you gain more experience, you can then create your own school or community initiative, and we can help you! Visit our Youth Initiatives section for some ideas and download the Project-Planning Guide for assistance!

All in all, getting involved in some volunteering activities is always beneficial. Beside getting great work experience and building your resume, you get to meet new people, learn new things, gain self-confidence and share your talents and ideas with others (Youth Canada). Plus, it’s an admirable way to go from being a teenager to a young adult!
