A Campfire

The school year is at its end and for some of you lucky readers, this may mean you’re finally finished high school and it’s graduation time! A variety of different activities may be taking place to celebrate your big accomplishment: boat cruises, private parties, dances, and if the weather allows it, there is nothing like celebrating around a nice bonfire at a campground. Whether it is to mark a particular occasion like graduating or simply to have a good time for the weekend, camping can indeed be awesome! But like many things, camping can turn into a fiasco if certain safety measures are not taken.

A campfire, marshmallows, mosquitoes and alcohol?

No need for alcohol to have fun while camping, but it is possible that some of your fellow campers (who are above the legal drinking age) will have drinks. If that occurs, here’s an idea that you may want to practice:

  • Choosing one or more designated campers can be very useful when camping and alcohol is mixed. The designated camper is there to help his companions when needed by: accompanying them to the restroom; ensuring that they don’t wander away from the campsite; or the opposite, don’t get to close to the campfire; etc.

In the end, regardless of your age, when you are out in the wild it is important to take the precautions to ensure that everyone stays safe, including the neighbouring campers, your group of friends and yourself. Click here and here to learn more about outdoor safety.

What’s with the noise?

Is it another group at the campground that are partying and making excessive noise? When that occurs, be careful and unless you are with a trusted adult, keep your distances. If you think that the other campers are breaking the campground rules or are neglecting their security and/or yours, notify an adult such as your parents, the park rangers, or those responsible for the campground.

Drinking and camping is not a new phenomenon on many campgrounds. But as long as the legal drinking age is obeyed, that it is done within the property regulations, that every camper is respectful towards people around them, everyone can stay safe and have fun.
