Issue: Bullying
Why? Many people are affected by bullying, but bullies are not always conscious of the harm they are causing
Updated: 2012-04-20
After meeting with Mr Cléroux, who is responsible for all committees at École Gisèle-Lalonde, I’ve realized that there was already an anti-bullying committee. Therefore, I had to refocus my project…
When I was discussing with my younger sister (who is in the 6th grade) about the problems her and her friends were having at their school with bullying, I realized that the youth who are entering a new school to start grade 7 are often worried about bullying. They are worried that in a bigger school with so many students, that they will be bullied and the teachers won’t notice it.
To help the primary students make a good transition to grade 7, I decided that it would be important to inform them that bullying in high school is not tolerated. I decided to redirect my plan to the doors open day for grade 7 students. They’ll be reassured that like in primary school, bullying should be stopped.
To accomplish this, me and my committee, will create a short video clip on the subject of bullies. This video clip will then be presented to the new grade 7s.

What issue did you choose to address in your Action Plan?
This issue I choose to address is bullying (all forms – cyberbullying and face-to-face).
Why did you choose that issue?
Many people are affected by bullying, but bullies are not always conscious of the harm they are causing; they don’t understand how it can harm other people. Often with bullies, nobody wants to speak up.
How are you going to address the selected issue?
Form committees in my school with help from my student council. I will hold meetings with committees each month to find solutions and encourage youth to speak up about bullying.
What do you hope to achieve in the next year?
Over the next year, I hope to prevent some bullying from happening and to ensure that the students are taking bullying seriously, by explaining how bad bullying can hurt someone.
What progress have you made so far?
For the first step of the project, Alix has begun establishing a student committee that will be targeting bullying and cyberbullying in her school.
The school council is in support of the project. The council will be having an important meeting with all those who will be a part of it (students, teachers, police officers) in January 2012. Because, it is such a common subject right now, many students have stated their interest and intention of joining the committee in an active way!
After speaking to the student council about my intentions to start up a project to target bullying, one of the teachers responsible for the council suggested that I attend a meeting with the council that will take place in January 2012 to present my project.
The teacher also told me that the council already had the intention to form a committee to target bullying, so if we put all our ideas together, the committee will be even bigger. A lot of my friends are going to be joining the committee to help with this project. I will also try to contact my school’s police officer for support if there are serious cases and if someone wants to talk them.
