Issue: Youth boredom
Why? There are several towns up here and the youth don’t often get the chance to interact with each other and participant in new activities

What issue did you choose to address in your Action Plan?

Youth boredom, lack of opportunity.

Why did you choose that issue? How are you going to address the selected issue?

We decided to partner up with the RCMP in a neighboring Community in order to plan a two day Hockey/ Recreation Camp. We decided to choose this issue as youth in several towns up here have never had the chance to participate in anything like this before and don’t often get the chance to interact or meet youth from other areas of the Territory.

What do you hope to achieve in the next year?

If successful youth and community members will realize that this sort of thing is possible. The ultimate hope is to make contacts and have interaction between communities to plan events.

What progress have you made so far?

The planning is still at the initial stages but Corvin will have several tasks assigned shortly including some of the following.

  • Recruiting youth
  • Arranging transportation
  • Planning night time activities during the camp(games, movies etc…)
  • Requesting financial assistance (if necessary) from the Band for local youth

As of right now it looks like I have secured an ex NHL player (formerly from the Yukon) to assist. Youth from four separate communities will have the option to overnight for two nights at the recreation center. The overnight plan may provide us with an opportunity to have the NHL player speak in front of the youth to address some issues. Much planning needs to go into this event. We have already secured facilities and are creating sign up/ insurance sheets.
