Issue: Youth Boredom
Why? There isn’t a whole lot to do around here, so that leaves youth getting into trouble/doing illegal things
Updated: 2012-04-20
We had an open school night back in February, I was unable to make it but Cst. Muirhead has told me that it didn’t turn out too well. This was partially due to the fact that it was the Friday right before our winter break so a lot of students were away. We hope to have another one later this month when we get back from our Easter break. We had the help of several teachers in our school that helped us organize and supervise. I hope to get them to help us again in planning and supervising our next night. That’s about it from us folks in Saskatchewan.

What issue did you choose to address in your Action Plan?
Youth Boredom.
Why did you choose that issue?
I chose youth boredom as my issue because youth in my community are bored. There isn’t a whole lot to do around here, so that leaves youth getting into trouble/doing illegal things. Ex. Drinking, doing drugs, egging vehicles, etc.
How are you going to address the selected issue?
I plan to work with my member and create an “open-school night.” We plan on just doing one Friday night a month, but if there is enough interest, we could do more. Our whole school will be open to students who want to hangout and just stay out of trouble. If SLC is putting on a dance one night, we might try and buddy up with them and have the library open and the games room open to students who don’t feel like dancing. Hopefully, we can put some education about drugs / alcohol into these fun nights as well.
What do you hope to achieve in the next year?
I hope to achieve a successful turnout for our Friday night open-school nights. And also to keep some of the bad things that teenagers may do when they are bored, from not happening.
What progress have you made so far?
I went around to a couple of teachers and asked if they would be interested in helping me out with this open school night idea, and they all said yes. We plan to start on it more after Christmas.
