Youth Leadership and Project Development Workshop

Jamie

Nunavut

Issue: Drugs
Why? They lead to violence, family problems, depression, dropping out of school.

Updated: 2012-03-20

From the Police Officer who accompanied Jamie to Regina:

We have not made any more presentations like last year.

The workshop has definitely helped Jamie. For me, it gave me a better perspective on youth in isolated communities, and I am still making efforts to help youth in my community.

The youth docket in the last court appearances have dropped. I doubt that the reason is that Jamie went to Regina, who knows, maybe it helped a bit??

We have partnered up with the Northern Store to purchase hoodies for all the kids at the elementary school in our community. It’s in the process as we speak and looking good for the Northern to purchase the merchandise and place the phrases ‘’say no to drugs” and ” stop bullying” on the hoodies.

As for barriers, money was an issue. My goal was to get a major company in town to pay for these shirts as it looks; they are going to pay the bill. I explained to the manager here, its good publicity for them as their logo and R.C.M.P. will be placed on the shirts.

As for help for this project, the managers of the Northern here helped with picking hoodies, colours and their company has a stitching partner in which they can get the hoodies and stitching done at cost prices.

What issue did you choose to address in your Action Plan? Our action plan was to combat the drug problem in our community.

Why did you choose that issue? They lead to violence, family problems, depression, dropping out of school.

How are you going to address the selected issue? Our plan is to go to the two schools here in Pangnirtung, go to about 2 classes a week starting with the grade 5’s.

What do you hope to achieve in the next year? I hope to inform people in the community about drug use.

What progress have you made so far? We decided to add tattoos to our plan and to give tattoos away to kids.  The kids really like these, and we partnered up with the Hamlet of Pangnirtung to put the logos of the Hamlet, RCMP, the Canadian flag, the Nunavut flag, and the wording ‘’say no to drugs” on the tattoos.  As we go interact with the kids, we will give out tattoos. I just received these tattoos late last week.  I started to give some away late last week. They really liked them.  I am waiting on a teacher to schedule a day this week, as last Friday, there was a storm and the school was closed just before the class with the kids we were supposed to talk to. Also, we will be going to the Junior Rangers meeting soon and I will talk about drugs like I will at the two schools.
